Personal hygiene is important for women trekkers, especially when there are minimal facilities available in the wilderness. This becomes a major concern when you are on your menses. Preparation is key to comfort, health, and confidence on the trail.

TREKKING HYGIENE KIT ESSENTIALS

Having a thoughtful hygiene kit packed is essential. Pack:

  • Menstrual Products: Select what works best for you—menstrual cups, tampons, or sanitary pads. Menstrual cups are environmentally friendly and less frequently need to be changed, but practice is required to use them properly.
  • Biodegradable Wet Wipes: Handy for wiping when water is limited. Select unscented, biodegradable wipes to have the least environmental impact.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Necessary to keep hands clean before eating and after using the restroom.
  • Ziplock Bags: Pack out used sanitary items and wipes in sealable bags.
  • Quick-Dry Towel: Useful for drying off after cleaning or surprise rain.
  • Toilet Paper or Tissues: Keep a supply handy, as facilities might not be available.
  • Pee Funnel: Items such as the Shewee or GoGirl can be useful for standing urination, particularly in less private areas.
  • Anti-Chafing Powder or Petroleum Jelly: Avoids chafing due to friction on long hikes.

TRAIL MENSTRUATION MANAGEMENT

Managing menstruation while trekking involves preparation:

  • Practice Beforehand: For use of menstrual cups or tampons, practice putting them in and taking them out before the trek so that one feels comfortable.
  • Stay Hydrated: Stay hydrated with plenty of water to decrease bloating and cramps.
  • Pain Management: Bring pain medication or natural pain relief alternatives such as herbal teas or heat wraps.
  • Hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water before and after removing menstrual products. Sanitize hands when there is no water.

OVERALL HYGIENE GUIDELINES

  • Underwear: Use moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics. Change daily or as often as needed to avoid infection.
  • Pee Cloth: A cloth can be used to dry after peeing. Clean and dry it regularly.
  • UTI Prevention: Wipe from front to back, pee often, and drink plenty of water to minimize the chances of getting a urinary tract infection.

LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLE

Respecting nature is first and foremost:

  • Waste Disposal: Take all used wipes and sanitary products with you. Burying or burning them is not acceptable.
  • Biodegradable Products: Utilize environmentally friendly soaps and wipes to reduce environmental footprint.

Good hygiene habits enable women trekkers to meet the trails with confidence and ease. Proper preparation and understanding of respecting nature enable each trek to be a rewarding experience.
